What is the Literacy Buzz Bowl?
The Literacy Buzz Bowl is a new program created by our school.  It's based on the national Battle of the Books competition. During the Fall 2024 semester, one of our parent volunteers came and read to our 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students.  At the end of the semester, students made posters and competed in a trivia-based competition and celebrated with ice cream sundaes.  During the 2025 Spring semester, students read a book that was part of their grade level curriculum.  Upon finishing their Buzz Bowl competitions, they celebrated with Krispie Kreme donuts!

 Educators agree that reading aloud builds vocabulary, strengthens fluency, improves active listening skills, serves as a launching point for discussions, builds a sense of classroom community, can improve memory and attention skills and aids in comprehension.  We are happy to announce that PTA will sponsor the Literacy Buzz Bowl for the 2025-2026 school year!
How to get Involved:
We know life is busy, but our kids deserve the best experience we can give them!  We need YOU to help us do that.

  • ABSOLUTELY NO TIME?  Pay your dues and become a member HERE.
  • Have 1 or 2 hours? Do the above and attend 1 or all of our PTA meetings: 9/9, 11/18, 2/10, 4/14, 5/19. RSVP HERE, we provide coffee, juice and snacks!
  • Have 3 or 4 hours?  Do the above and check out our VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES; sign up to help with one of our monthly snack sales, change out the decorations in the Teachers' Lounge, pull some weeds/ prune some plants at our Spring Garden Work Day, May Bike to School Day, etc.
  • Have more time to help? Do the above and text us (512) 402-2023 or email us. 

Have a little time to spare?  Volunteer with a PTA Committee:

Fine Arts / Little EAST

This committee helps come up with fun ways for families to engage with the Fine Arts Academy at Blackshear. We sign up for the Annual Austin Studio Tours and turn our school into an art gallery, our students perform their musical instruments, the drama club does Shakespeare and improv shows, and host a silent auction. Join this committee if you want to help support fine arts at Blackshear!

Fundraising

This committee comes up with new and creative ways to support Blackshear financially. This committee secures the Little EAST Silent Auction donations.  They host monthly Snack sales after school! Join this committee if you want to help find funding to support all the fun things the PTA does.

Staff Appreciation

This committee helps organize fun ways to show Blackshear Teachers, administrators, and support staff a little appreciation. We try to have something planned once a month, like staff lunches, coffee & treats in the Breakroom, getting missing supplies, and providing opportunities for Teacher Self-Care like providing massages one month or gift cards to local businesses the next.

Garden

This committee helps connect families interested in campus beautification. We look for ways to make sure we are being considerate of the planet and plan ways to get involved with the outdoors! Join this committee if you like getting dirty, recycling, and gardening.
